Everything you need to know about chew bones for dogs

Chewing, gnawing, and licking are natural behaviors for all dogs and serve several important functions. Giving your dog a chew bone is a way to provide a reward, a moment of enjoyment, and relaxation, while also contributing to better dental health. In this chew guide, we break down the different types of chew bones available, what distinguishes them, and which one is best suited for your dog.

Why give dogs chew bones?

A tasty chew bone is appreciated, if not loved, by most dogs. Not only does it taste great, but chewing also releases endorphins, known as happiness hormones, in the dog. This means that a stressed dog can become calmer by having something to chew on.

In addition to satisfying the natural chewing needs that dogs have, regular chewing and gnawing can help promote good dental health and prevent tartar buildup by massaging the gums and gently wearing down the tooth surface.

Why different types?

Different dogs prefer different types of chew bones—whether it’s about size, flavor, chew resistance, or shape. Perhaps your dog's favorite is a rawhide chew ring, a pressed chew bone with substantial chew resistance, or something extra tasty with chicken, lamb, or duck?

Things to consider

Remember to always supervise your dog when giving a chew or other reward and ensure they have access to fresh water. Also, keep in mind that puppy stomachs can be sensitive. Before four months of age, chews and rewards should be given very sparingly and under careful supervision.

Chew bones are meant solely as a supplement to your dog's complete food and should always be given in moderation, no matter how much the dog loves them. And remember that dogs, just like humans, can be sensitive to certain ingredients or foods.

What Size Chew Bone Should I Choose?

The size of the chew bone roughly reflects the size of your dog. All our chews are labeled with size: Extra Small (XS), Small (S), Medium (M), Large (L), and Extra Large (XL). The size gives you an indication of which type of dog it is suitable for. In addition to the size, the packaging is also marked with chew resistance on a scale of 1-3. A filled dot means light resistance, e.g., a ground chew stick, two dots mean moderate chew resistance, and three filled dots mean the highest chew resistance, e.g., a pressed chew bone.

Different types of dog chew

Pressed

A pressed chew bone consists of several layers of dried rawhide that have been compressed into a compact and solid chew. This provides greater chew resistance, and the chewing time is therefore longer compared to, for example, the rolled varieties.

Rolled

Rolled chews, often referred to as chew rolls, are dried beef rawhide that has been rolled together to provide a chew with moderate chew resistance. They come in various forms, such as straight rolls, rings, or knotted chew bones.

Grounded

Ground dog chews are dried rawhide that has been ground down and mixed with rice to make it easier to chew. They are primarily designed for smaller dogs and dogs that have difficulty chewing the pressed or rolled chews.

Flavored Chew Bones

Flavored chew bones are also particularly appreciated by dogs with somewhat picky tastes. They become even tastier by being dipped in a flavorful chicken or beef broth during production. One of our most popular chew bones with more flavor is Heavenly, a premium chew that lasts longer and comes in three different flavors: Farmer’s Beef, Farmer’s Chicken, and Farmer’s Natural (which you can find under the traditional rolled chews). They are also available in various sizes and shapes.

Easy Chew

Easy Chew is a pressed chew with chicken wrapped around the chew stick. The functional shape makes it easier to chew than uniformly thick dog chews. It is available in several different sizes to suit most dogs.

Chicken Chip Rolls

Chicken Chip Rolls are tasty, flavorful rolls made of beef hide with small pieces of chicken inside. This ensures that the delicious chicken flavor is evenly distributed throughout the chewing time. They are available as chew sticks, rolls, and rings.

Chicken Stuffed Bone

Manufacturing

It starts with the cow.

The animal is cared for, and the meat goes to food production, while the outer skin is used for leather production such as bags, shoes, etc. The inner skin is sent to the chew factory.

Here, the inner skin is processed and rolled by hand into chew bones. Different variants are made depending on whether it should be a stick, knot, or bone.
